Spirit Army

Writer's picture: Jack Jack

This week's Silly army review is vary spooky! OOooooowooooOOO

Want to run spooky scary ghosts but just love evil armies? Got some Dead of Dunharrow left over and don't know what to do with them? Then maybe this is the army for you!

The Witch-king and The Tainted prepare with the spirits of the dead for the coming battle

Angmar

Using dead of Dunharrow models, of a 10 man sprue, 3 have spear, 2 have mace, 1 has an axe, and 4 have swords. Since they have Blades of the Dead special rule, they can't do special strikes with their weapons. It would be ludicrous to be required to pay the 1 point upgrade for changing the weapon, as it has no baring on what they can do.

Angmar's army rule allows orcs to gain the Terror rule if they are in proximity to a spirit model. Not a bad special rule, as they are wanting a mix of spectres and orcs, and definitely the better way to play this faction.

The available Spirit models for this themed army are:

Heroes

Ring Wraiths: only 3 named

• The Witch-king

• Dwimmerlaik

• The tainted

Shade

Barrow Wight

Troops

Dead march spectre

My take on the ghostly Dead of Dunharrow look, compared with a more Dead March Spectre paint scheme

The amazing

  • Spamming the special rule A Fell Light is in Them. This is amazing against low courage armies, causing disarray in their lines, combined with army wide terror.

  • Ring-wraiths have Harbinger of Evil which will buff not only A Fell Light is in Them as well as the Blades of the Dead attacks.

  • Shades give -1 to duel rolls for everyone except friendly Angmar models. Another huge ability the from the forces of Angmar. This can seriously help your troops in combat, who needs banners when the opponent can only roll a 5 at best! (Thanks to Léon on the Zorpazorp FB page for the correction)

The good

  • Terror on everything

  • Ring wraiths available:

    • Witch-king - can be beefed up to a complete monster in combat at over 200 points, or a random 80 point dude in a black cloak. The choice is yours

    • Tainted - wounds people in base contact with him. Not too bad, but basically an unnamed ring-wraith for all other abilities and stats.

    • Dwimmerlaik - no might but his ability to make your opponent spend an extra might/will/fate. The Dwimmerlaik is more of a supportive hero than a combat master. He lacks might, has a two-handed weapon, but he makes up for it with his special ability: if an enemy spends a point of M/W/F within range of him, he can spend a point of Will and on a 4+ the target has to spend an additional point or loose the one they already spent. This can have a huge impact on the battle, being able to burn through your opponents Fate or Might impacts their survivability and ability to impact the game.

The bad

  • Spectres are OOP, but can be made with Numenorians, high elves, or just paint dead of Dunharrow models not as ghostly.

  • No spears, orc spears are cheap, but they aren't spirits :/

  • No shields on spectres, so no shielding if you are getting swamped.

  • Slow, no fast cavalry. You'll be stuck at the movement of 5"

  • Terrible against high courage armies, they negate the Spectre's Fell Light ability, and the Spectres wound against courage. Pretty much negates all the good points of this army.

The ugly

  • Low Model count. at 15 points for a basic troop, you're paying the same as a rider of rohan, or other similar cavalry. You'll need to be careful against hordes

  • Your dead march spectres are only D5, unlike their Dead of Dunharrow counterparts at d6 or d7. Expect to loose them a little too easily.

495 Point list

-Witch-king (Crown, 3M, +4W, 3F, Armoured Horse)

-Shade

-16 spectres

Swapping the Witch-king for the Tainted on foot saves you 40 points, allowing for 3 more spectres to be added. A decent list with 18 terror causing models, with one giving Harbinger of Evil to really bolster your armies effectiveness. The Shade as well will make up for the lack of a banner in the army.

750 Point List

Thikk Witch-king (Crown, 3M, +6W, 3F, Fell Beast)

13 Spectres

Dwimmerlaik on Fell Beast

12 Spectres

Two fell beasts can but out some serious damage, the Dwimmerlaik wont be suffering the -1 penalty for two handed weapon as the Fell Beast will be attacking. Both of these have Harbinger of Evil, which as said before, buff the rest of your army considerably.

A pretty fun theme to look into, and should give me some more use out of my spare Dead of Dunharrow models I have lying about. The spectres are definitely a great warrior model to include in an Angmar army. Adding some Orcs with spears and maybe a cave troll or two would be the way to play this army normally.
